Found in file WO 309-1697 at (UK) National Archives is the May 21, 1945 affidavit by 23 year old Polish Jew Chil Kestenberg. It reads in part:In June 1944 I was sent to Monowitsch camp near Cracow, Poland and was there for 5 months. During that time I saw a Doctor MENGELE and Obersturmführer SCHWARTZ who made many selections for executions. I was present many times. The victims were taken away in my presence in lorries. The lorries returned the same day with the victims clothes. It was well understood in the Camp that the victims were gassed to death at Auschwitz. I, of course, did not see the gassings. I have no doubt the victims were gassed.
