12-year-old Auschwitz sonderkommando?

The following is a widely reported story about a 15 year old boy who gave an affidavit to Czech war crimes investigators at Buchenwald in 1945 in which he supposedly claimed to have had finished working as a sonderkommado at Auschwitz-Birkenau the previous year, i.e. at aged 14, when he was transferred to Buchenwald. What age he claimed to have started working as a sonderkommando is unclear, but maybe it was at aged 12, as the article does suggest.

Incidentally, for those who don't already know, Terezín is the Czech name for Theresienstadt, and in the article Terezin does not refer to the ghetto but Theresienstadt family camp situated in compound BIIb at Birkenau.

  1. Terezin jewish extermination camp at Auschwitz-Birkenau? Was that Terezin (Theresienstadt) or Auschwitz-Birkenau? The article seems to indicate that boy worked at Theresienstadt. The Allies patently ignored the Theresienstadt ghetto and the Auschwitz-Birkenau camps were 2 different things when that article was written.

    Mengele also worked at Theresienstadt???

    1. "Compound BIIb (Bauabschnitt IIb)

This compound of the camp operated as a camp for Jewish families (Familienlager Theresienstadt) deported from the Theresienstadt ghetto near Prague. They remained here from September 1943 until July 1944, when the camp was cleared and the inmates were sent to be murdered in the gas chambers. The compound was then used as a womens's camp: in September and October of that year, it was used to hold Polish women who had been arrested in Warsaw during the Warsaw Uprising and were transferred to Auschwitz from the Pruszków transit camp. In November, additional women were transferred here when the camp for women in Compound BIb in Birkenau was closed down."

  2. A kid who had to be killed in the gas chamber was allowed to work in the gas chamber.
    Obviously he survived.

    1. He is not the only one. I learned that 14-year old Tova Adler was forced to pull out corpses out of an Auschwitz gas chamber, after she escaped from being gassed by slowly stepping backwards from the gas chamber´s door.
But soon after that she was transported to Dachau and survided. The report concludes with the words: "There are many stories like hers in Israel." No doubt.
