Elie Wiesel testifying at Klaus Barbie's trial

If any French speakers want to inform me of what Wiesel is saying, I'd be very grateful.

  1. Very quickly:
The man I am, the Jude I am , If i survived it is to testify, not to talk about the dead, but to talk for them.. I'm convinced that dead people will talk one day. No justice is available for dead. It is a fight for the memory. I don't want the killer to kill twice (people + memory). It will not be the fault of the killer if the memories are erased, but ours

  2. "If i survived" really? To talk "for" the death? Let the death speak for themselves. The memories that are erased are about the guilt of Zion."If i survived" really? To talk "for" the death? Let the death speak for themself. The memories that are eraesed are about the guilt of Zion.

    Basically translated :

    L'homme que je suis...
    The man I am...

    Le juif que je suis...
    The jew I am...

Je me dis que si j'ai survécu...
I think that, if I have surived...

    Par hasard...
    By chance...

    C'est pour témoigner.
    It's to witness.

To speak, not in the name of those who left me...

No one has the right to speak in their name...

Mais peut-être de parler à leur place...
But maybe to speak for them...

Some day, they will speak, them, I am convinced of it.

    Et alors la Terre tremblera.
And then the Earth will tremble.

No justice is possible for the dead.

On ne peut plus les ramener.
    We cannot bring them back.

    Il s'agit de mémoire.
    It is about memory.

Parce que le tueur tue deux fois :
Because the killer kills twice :

    La première fois en tuant
    The first time, by killing

And the second time by trying to erase the traces of the murder.

We have not been able to prevent their first death.

It's now about preventing their second death.

And if the killer is guilty of the first death,

The second (death) would not be his guilt, but ours.

That's not a perfect translation since Wiesel's french isn't very good and neither is my english.
    Hope that helps anyway.

    1. That's brilliant! Thank you so much for taking the time and trouble to do it. It's very much appreciated.
